Welcome to Kokoda Outdoor Education

At Kokoda Outdoor Education, we’re committed to transforming lives through experiences that challenge, inspire, and unite. Guided by the values exemplified by the Kokoda Track campaign, we offer young people the opportunity to grow through outdoor adventures and personal challenges. Our programs are designed to build resilience, leadership, and teamwork, while fostering a profound connection with nature.

Kokoda Outdoor Education operates two outdoor education centres. Kokoda Park, our centre based facility at Thornton in the Lockyer Valley and Camp Kokoda, our expedition style camp at Maroon in the Scenic Rim.

In a world where it’s becoming increasingly difficult to provide realistic experiences for youth to challenge themselves in a safe and controlled environment, we are fortunate to have locations which lend themselves to providing these opportunities. Our instructors are all well qualified and experienced and will provide a challenging yet safe space for your students to extract maximum value out of their time with us.

Challenge by Choice: Personal empowerment in every step

Our “Challenge by Choice” philosophy is central to everything we do. Each participant is empowered to engage with activities – whether it’s a ropes course, a team-building exercise, or a rugged hike – at a level that feels right for them. This approach encourages each individual to step outside their comfort zone at their own pace, allowing for personal breakthroughs without the pressure to meet anyone else’s expectations. By tailoring challenges to individual readiness, we promote confidence, foster growth, and create a supportive environment where everyone can succeed.

The Four Pillars of Kokoda:
The Heart of Our Mission

Embedded in every experience we offer are the four pillars that defined the Kokoda campaign:

  • Courage – We encourage participants to confront fears, try new experiences, and discover their inner strength.
  • Endurance – Our programs emphasise perseverance, teaching young people that resilience is built through steady effort and overcoming obstacles.
  • Mateship – Teamwork is essential in every activity. We create a culture where individuals support each other, forging bonds that reflect the spirit of mateship found on the Kokoda Track.
  • Sacrifice – We teach the importance of selflessness and giving back, showing participants the value of contributing to something greater than themselves.

At Kokoda Outdoor Education, every adventure is a journey of growth, grounded in values that last a lifetime. Join us to embark on an experience that builds character, fosters friendships, and celebrates the enduring spirit of Kokoda.

Excellent leaders – kept the students engaged, spoke with confidence and were fun but with lessons that will carry students through life.

Our staff and students are raving about their experiences with Camp Kokoda this year. I have heard nothing but really positive stories about all aspects of camp. Thank you to the whole team at Camp Kokoda for providing such a unique and powerful experience to our young people.

Staff members were really impressed with the instructors in terms of organisation, enthusiasm and engagement. We particiularly liked bush craft, teaching the students how to identify trees, make damper etc. The activities extended the student learning of bush survival and general interest in camping.

What a great camp! Very organised, very safe and all (deceptively) close to base so students can get help if needed asap. Still had a very remote feel at the campsites, feels like you’re full bush! Our students loved it

Our first year experiencing Kokoda with the Yr.9 cohort, and we will definitely be back. An amazing 5 days of outdoor challenges, team building, appreciation and growth – away from distractions and technology. A magical, bush setting for students to gain insight into self and others. Delicious, clean, healthy meals – students gained endless skills in bush cooking and utilising fire. Plenty of camp games, laughs, group challenges, fun, adventure and creativity. Professional, knowledgeable group leaders – guiding and seeking each student to ‘be more’. Very evident Camp Kokoda is a well oiled establishment that offers a must experience for our fine youth of today. One of challenge, fun and growth. One that caters for varying abilities and confidence. One that maintains safety and respect. Camp Kokoda was a powerful experience for our students, they cannot stop raving about it.

This camp really tested our survival skills, teaching us how to put up a tent, cook our own food, etc. Camp Kokoda was a way to not only test our survival skills, but to learn about the young men who had to travel 100’s of kilometers to fight for this country in WWII. The staff were really nice, and helped us if we needed it. Some of the fun things about this camp were the memories, camps in general generate good memories, but Camp Kokoda was different, being outdoors was really relaxing. Overall a really good exeprience.

Our school attends Kokoda Camp each year for our annual Year 9 camp. The service offered by the whole team at Kokoda is excellent. Management works hard to accomodate the diverse needs of over 200 students and staff and goes above and beyond to help up realise the aims of our camp curriculum. Admin staff are professional, organised and friendly. Instructors are well trained, patient, knowledgeable and fun.
The highlights for me as a in school coordinator are to observe the way our students experience growth through challenge and the building of positive relationships with their guides.
Our students report highlights of loving the activities and challenges, being in nature away from screens and strengthening friendships.
Thanks for another terrific Camp Kokoda!

Camp Kokoda is the complete location!
As an outdoor education teacher I couldn’t be happier with the service and delivery of programs. Staff are engaged, build great relationships with students, while their practises are safe and always putting safety first.

I went to Camp Kokoda through school expecting another mediocre experience in which I got nothing out of, but Camp Kokoda exceeded my expectations and is a program I would absolutely participate in again. During the three days I was there, there was not one dull moment. Though the giant swing, tree tops course, sugar glider and flying fox were all brilliant, what really made my camp was our instructor who treated every student with equality and support. He never made anyone do anything they weren’t comfortable with, and he was always calm and collected. He played jokes on, and with us, and told us stories around the campfire – he even took the time to learn about each and every individual under his care. Jared taught us mateship, sacrifice, endurance and courage, and you could tell that he truly cares about what he does. In summary, Camp Kokoda was a 10/10 experience.  I thought I wasn’t the type of person to go hiking or do anything adventurous- but I found skills and developed abilities I never thought I could ever have. This program provided an exemplar experience which I highly recommend.
